Seagull
DAVID ASHBY GETS ACQUAINTED WITH THE FIRST IN A NEW RANGE
OF BALSA-BUILT GLIDERS FROM SEAGULL
T
his is something of a departure
for a company that’s built a
good reputation based on a
successful line of i.c. sport and scale
designs. Refreshingly, though,
Seagull has resisted the urge to use
foam for this 78.75” (2000mm) span
powered glider and instead do what
they do best, by using good ol’ balsa
and ply in its construction.
With one or two exceptions, quality
is generally up to Seagull’s high
standard. The fl apless wing is a fi nely
sculpted undercambered device with
long, factory-hinged strip ailerons,
and there’s a T-tail at the aft end (no
rudder, disappointingly). Access to
the interior is via the wing cavity and
a forward canopy hatch that’s
retained by a tab at the front and a
strong magnet to the rear. The small
landing wheel is a nice touch and,
overall, the appearance is of a
slick-looking aircraft.
POWER CHOICE
The power system recommendation
is brief, the box and instructions
referring only to a 400 / 480-size
electric motor and 9 x 7” prop.
Pictured in the instructions,
meanwhile, is a 2000mAh 3s Li-Po.
I think this is a sports / warmliner /
hotliner at heart, so my power
system selection centred on getting
a respectable number of watts from
the powertrain, suffi cient to pull the
2.5 lb (1.1kg) model around with a
decent amount of authority. I’m a bit
of a fan of MVVS cased outrunners
and after initially trying a 2.5 1350Kv
motor, settled on a 3.5 1200Kv unit
swinging a 9 x 6” prop. Powered by
a 3s 2200mAh Li-Po via a 60A ESC
the system produces 390W at 37A
peak, which is suffi cient to place the
model fi rmly in the borderline
hotliner bracket.
Incidentally, MVVS outrunners are
beautifully made, the aforementioned
sizes (2.5 and 3.5) referring to the i.c.
A blingy mock
carbon canopy
needs a similar
spinner in my book.
Seagull’s 2000 is
clearly for
intermediate and
experienced pilots.
